Congratulations to Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova, who defeated world number 1 Angelique Kerber of Germany in Sunday’s 2016 WTA Finals. Cibulkova, the number 7 seed, beat Kerber 6-3, 6-4 to win her biggest title to date.
Proving to be year of transition and change on the WTA Tour, 2016 has seen more than its fair share of surprises, and Cibulkova’s ascendency to the elite level of the WTA is clearly among them. In a field of increasingly taller and physically imposing competitiors, the 5’3″ “Domi”‘s success this season has been all the more remarkable.
As 2016 comes to a close on the WTA Tour, we can surely look ahead to a year of more surprises in 2017 as the younger players make their mark.
