Rain, rain go away.
With heavy afternoon rain imminent, two of the four quarterfinals were completed, and two others begun but not finished and suspended in progress as downpours arrived about three P.M., wiping out play for the balance of the day.
Yulia Putinseva ousted Michelle Larcher de Brito in straight sets 6-3 7-6, while top seeded Kiwi Marina Erakovic retired after splitting sets with Anett Kontaveit, Kontaveit prevailing 2-6 6-2 ret. Putinseva and Kontaveit were fortunate in finishing their quarterfinals before the rain hit, as Taylor Townsend was two games from dismissing fellow American Allie Kiick in straight sets, but will settle for sitting on a 6-2 4-1 lead heading into Saturday. Canadian Heidi El Tabakh opened strongly with a 4 game run of good serving and solid groundstroking before American Julia Boserup finally held and broke prior to the suspension of play, and El Tabakh will begin play Saturday with a break and a two game cushion, up 4-2.
